Is President Biden finally keeping his promise to protect communities of color from climate change?

On Friday, just in time for Earth Day, he signed an executive order to prioritize environmental justice for federal agencies. They will be required to address the harms caused by the nation's history of environmental racism and address the disproportionate impact of pollution and climate change on communities of color.

To make that happen, the order mandates the creation of the first-ever Office of Environmental Justice, which will fall under the 25-member White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Many Black environmentalists — like Dr. Robert Bullard, the father of the environmental justice movement, and LaTricea D. Adams, the founder, CEO, and president of Black Millennials 4 Flint — enthusiastically applauded Biden's initiative.

Other activists are concerned about Biden taking campaign money from the oil and gas industry and continuing to greenlight oil drilling, even as he gets applause for creating this office.

Click here to read more about what Biden's executive order says and why some activists are skeptical it will effect meaningful environmental change.
